Vent it Out (before the "Mom Rage" sets in)
The New York Times recent article on Mom Rage confirmed my hunch, we’re piling more and more on but not giving ourselves the space to vent it out. Of course there’s rage! Where else would that pent up energy go?
You need to Vent.
Vent:
1. an opening that allows air, gas, or liquid to pass out of a confined space (aka quarantining with your family for months under stressful circumstances)
2. the expression or release of a strong emotion, energy, etc.
Venting vs Complaining - They’re different
Like many women I know - I am a very verbal person. You too? We like to discuss things - in detail. If I don’t like a situation, I talk about it, then I work out how to fix it. Oftentimes this can be first misconstrued as complaining, but I think we are just craving to be heard. In my house, my partner who is on the phone all day, isn’t always up for a vent session with me. But the frustration is going to come up and out one way or another - especially now.
Us Moms are typically the Chief Logistics Officer of our households. Being the CLO is a hefty job in itself, add on actual parenting, cleaning, cooking, shopping, bathing and regardless if you’re a working mom or not, your plate is very full. Enter Covid-19, we’re doing an absurd amount of things but often feel bad complaining because we have it “good”. Are most of us quite fortunate? Yes. Is it ok to be frustrated even though we have our basic needs met? Also - yes.
We need to speak out our frustrations to see all the elements that are standing in our path toward happiness. As long as we’re committed to bettering ourselves and our situation - how can venting be bad?
It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to complain just to complain, but if you're venting because you're trying to resolve something that’s not working then I say - vent away. And if no one will listen to you and help bounce solutions around, then contact me, because I will.
