What to Bring

Road trip packing tips: Bring snacks, drinks and car fun like games, sticker books and audiobooks. I like to make a dollar store trip for some fun car surprises.

  • Dress is beach casual/vacation attire. Wear what you are comfortable in! (There will be a photographer on site Saturday and you’ll get free access to download all photos). Don’t forget your bathing suits! Aside from the ocean, there’s a pool on-site. You may want sneakers for walks or hiking, too.

  • Weather is cool in the mornings & evenings and low to mid 70s during the day - pack layers

  • Kids bikes / scooters: We think there’s enough to do on foot, but it’s also a great place to bike and scooter so if you’d like, bring those too. Adult bike rentals are available nearby.

  • Food and drink. Breakfast and dinner is included and lunch will be during family free time. We have recommendations on restaurants (below) or feel free to stock your mini fridge with lunch and snack items. You can grab a la cart picnic items including wine and beer at the on-site restaurant & shop The Canteen or there is also a great grocery store in Cambria serving local organic groceries, wine, beer, salads and sandwiches. Please bring a water bottle for your child(ren).

    Road trip tips

Here are some great places to get out and stretch or have lunch along your journey

Carpinteria (1.5 hrs from LA)

Beautiful beaches, small shops and cafes, right off the highway

Santa Claus Lane - Santa Claus Lane is a popular locals favorite for it's wide stretch of gorgeous white sand with a perfect break for swimming, boogie boards and beginning surfers.

Padaro Beach Cafe 3765 Santa Claus Lane, Carpinteria, CA 93013
Fish tacos and a sand pit for the kids to play in with an ocean view. Right on the beach for a little beach walk before or after a bite. http://padarobeachgrill.com/

The Spot 389 Linden Ave, Carpinteria, CA 93013
A hamburger stand that has been serving burgers and fries for more than 50 years. There’s nothing fancy about the burger: ground beef, American cheese, crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, a dill pickle and thousand island dressing. But there it is — the classic beach burger. http://www.facebook.com/TheSpotCarpinteria

Across from The Spot is a playground and a beautiful walkway along the Carpinteria State Beach.

Los Alamos (1 hour from Carpinteria along the 101, 2 hours to Cambria)

With its decidedly chill vibe and population of less than 2000, Los Alamos is the coolest little Western town in Santa Barbara County. Walk the restaurants, galleries and shops on Bell Street.

Bob's Well Bread Bakery 550 Bell St, Los Alamos, CA 93440 (open till 6PM) (805) 344-3000
Quaint bakery with a folksy interior offering artisanal bread, pastries & creative cafe fare.

Convivial eatery specializing in creative wood-fired pizzas, locally sourced fare & craft brews. http://fulloflifefoods.com/

Avila Beach (1 hour from Los Alamos, 1 hour to Cambria)

Avila Beach is a small and quiet family friendly beach town. It’s beautiful landscape, beach playgrounds and ocean view restaurants make it a great stop for families.

Custom House 404 Front Street Avila Beach, CA 93424
This Central Coast beach-side location holds beautiful views with a casual atmosphere. The menu has something for everyone; we recommend the fresh fish! https://oldcustomhouse.com/

Ocean Grill 268 Front Street Avila Beach, CA
Ocean Grill in Avila Beach offers expansive views of the Pacific that is just across the street and a menu created by Executive Chef Michael Reyes, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York. http://oceangrillavila.com/
